Raven-Symone Apologizes for Comment on Name Discrimination

Raven-Symone, co-host on The View, was part of a discussion on the show last week about a study on people who make racial assumptions based on names. She made the comment that she discriminated against people with ethnic names.

“I’m not about to hire you if your name is Watermeloandrea,” she said. ““It’s just not going to happen. I’m not going to hire you.”

However, this week she made a Facebook post apologizing and saying that her “comment was in poor taste. My lack of empathy toward name discrimination was uncalled for.”

Symone also said that she has been denied a lot of jobs in the past based on her outward appearance and she sympathizes with those who were hurt by her comment. According to Symone, the comment she made wasn’t even true.

“As an equal opportunity employer, I have never discriminated against a name….even though I said I would, it’s not true,” Symone said.

She hopes that outward appearances, sexual orientation, age and names wouldn’t be a factor in hiring for a job but often times it is.

“…that’s the truth and it sucks,” Symone said. “But I should not be part of the problem, I should be part of the solution.”
