CHRISTIAN SARGENT: On Preserving Her Mother's Legacy While Creating a Pancake Empire

Often mistakenly called Vicky, Christian Sargent is the co-founder and CEO of Vicky Cakes Pancake and Waffle Mix. She managed to take a long-time family recipe and turn it into a kitchen necessity. Being the youngest of four, Christian’s mother Vicky raised her with the skills for cooking filled with family traditions. She often crafted recipes from scratch, including her famous pancake mix.

After continuing the tradition, Christian began making pancakes using her mother’s recipe for her family. Her husband later suggested that the family share the amazing taste with the world by starting a business. Excited by the idea, Vicky Cakes Pancake and Waffle Mix name was born in 2013. However, it wasn’t until six years later that Christian decided to push the idea and package the pancake mix for sales.

Vicky Cakes was featured on ABC’s Good Morning America television show during the pandemic. After the episode aired, they sold 154,000 bags of pancake mix in less than 24 hours.

“We’re going to show up, and we’re going to show out because you can’t miss these kinds of opportunities.”

Christian and her team were able to fill that order from the inner workings of her home. They went from her kitchen to a rented commercial kitchen, and within a matter of two weeks, they were on the hunt for their own facility. The rise of this black-owned empire was inevitable.
